21st Annual Human Rights Awards

Join us for our 21st Anniversary on December 9, 2023, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the South Bay Labor Council.  We will commemorate 75 Years of Human Rights with keynote speeches from Renee Saucedo, an immigrant rights activist, and Dr. William Armaline, a human rights scholar.

We will also celebrate our 2023 DECKS honorees:

  • Corporate-free progressive political leader Hon. Sally Lieber will receive the Democracy Award.

  • Union and feminist activist Joan Goddard will receive the Equity Award for her role in promoting gender equity.

  • The Mandela Grocery Cooperative will receive the Cooperation Award for democracy and equity at work.

  • Judge Katherine Lucero will receive the Kindness Award for her advocacy on behalf of girls and children.

  • The Sustainability Award will be received by Our City Forest, the San Jose tree planting agency par excellence.

Under the theme “Solidarity Forever”, CWA union coop leader Frankie from the Design Action Collective will discuss how union members can buy struggling businesses and why worker-owned co-ops should unionize, with examples from UFCW, UE, USW, and others. Samir Laymoun, founder of Santa Clara County Palestinian Cultural Day, will also speak on the urgent need to support Palestinian human rights.
